I think Gillian was too nice to Miriam by the end. He already gave her his $1,000. Yes, it was generous and noble because his love for her was unrequited. However, to give a veritable fortune to Miriam because Gillian thought she 'deserved' it was giving away a lot too much. It's not that she was undeserving.
